Once daylight arrives it again warms up quickly, though the sky remains overcast.

You resume your climb up the pass. To either side of you are mountains peaks rearing to an altitude of 12,000'.

Late in the morning you finally reach the crest of the pass. Now it begins to descend into the southern lands, and a fresh vista opens up before you. The forest cloaks the flanks of the mountains, but beyond that is an arid, treeless plateau. Far off in the hazy distance you see another range of peaks. Between the forest and the mountains, nothing appears to grow.

You begin your descent.

The afternoon passes without further incident. By nightfall you are near the mouth of the pass. You see now that the Kames peaks extend off to the northwest, behind you. To the southeast they merge with another, mightier chain of mountains. Consulting your map, you see that the latter direction is where you must proceed.

Again overnight the temperature plunges to 18F, as the proximity of the desert is felt.
