Mort teleports the lot of you - save Morteft - to the city of Greyhawk where you spend a few days getting the lay of the land. Seeking directions, you then make the easy three day walk up to Castle Greyhawk, arriving there on the 27th day of Reaping.
After the usual tussles with the castle guard you enter the castle and eventually find yourselves wandering about the lower level of the Citadel Union.
Sooner or later you stumble across a storefront with a large, garish orange sign that reads -
'Hovel Depot'
With a mixture of curiousity and revulsion you enter...
During the afternoon of the 27th day of Reaping, Stump, Carburator and Voss are surprised when a large crowd of nine people come walking in. They actually look like adventuring types.
The newcomers see a store filled with hardware, tools, lumber and the like. People in orange aprons are running about. A gang of dwarves are happily destroying the walls separating it from the adjacent shops.
"Welcome to Hovel Depot," says one of the aproned associates. "I am Nardelli. Hows may I help ya?"
"Welcome my friends. Excuse the mess but we are remodeling," says Voss.
"We just step over or around stuff," Oh Well replies.
Carburator walks over and says, "Welcome folks, how are you doing? It has been a while, hasn't it? You look like you are here about the adventuring. Is that correct?"
"Word travels fast," Oh Well answers. "Yes, we are here about the adventuring. We need some information."
Carburator nods and says, "Well, this is the place for it. There is a vast dungeon nearby that is need of clearing. I would like a group to clear it out for me. The payment is a base of operations, which, as you can see, is being built now, for free use. You also get to keep 90% of all treasure you find. Interested?"
"What are the hazards of the job, ie: who, or what lives in the dungeon? Also, why do you want it cleared out?" Oh Well asks.
Carburator says, "It is a mix of monsters. As to why...it is because it is a threat to this undercity. There is constant danger which I hope to remove by having most of it cleared."
He pauses for a moment. "As for hazards...the usual, that is, death, dismemberment, disability and all the others. Of course, what awaits you is wealth, new experiences, glory, a chance to make the difference in the lives of thousands of citizens and, most importantly, fun."
He smiles. "Interested, my friends?"
As you debate you become aware of a commotion out in the hallway beyond.
"You knucklehead!"
"Ow!"
"Wise guy!"
"I'll give you wise guy!"
"Ouch!"
Three dwarves enter the store, whom Stump, Carburator and Voss recognise to be Moe, Larry and Curly.
"This must be the place. 'Adventurers Wanted'. That's what the sign said," says Moe.
"Hi, guys!" says Larry to you.
Carburator smiles and says, "Hi Larry! It is good to see you three again. How are things going?"
"We're broke," says Moe, poking Larry in the eye. "What's this about easy pickings downstairs in the dungeon?"
Carburator says, "Well, that is the word on the street. Are you guys ready to go find out? Fame, fortune and all of that jazz might await you below."
"Really?" says Curly. "I could be famous, like Moe?"
"Wise guy!" says Moe, and kicks him in the rear.
"Let's go, fellas!" says Larry.
Stump whispers to Carburator, "I knew we should have put stipulations as to what type of adventurers we wanted."
Carburator chuckles and says, "Though they are stalwart and true, my friend."
"I'll give you that much," Stump nods.
The three dwarves bow to you and then exit Hovel Depot, heading for the entrance to the dungeons below.
"Money, riches, here we come!" says Larry.
"Woo-hoo!" says Curly.
Carburator says to Stump, "Do you want to join them? Some of these other newcomers may want to also join them."
He looks over at the group. "Anyone interested?"
"Somebody's gotta make sure they stay alive," Stump replies.
"Yeah, I agree, Stump." Oh Well nods his head. "Let me get my things."
Dithion, Tassier and Chilgith move in that direction. Chilgith says, "It will be nice to be on an adventure again!"
You change into dungeoneering garb and hurry after the dwarves.
Soon you have caught up with Moe, Larry and Curly and made your way down into the first level of the dungeon. You spend three days exploring the level but it remains empty after the GREY party cleared it three years ago. You head down to the second level and explore it, but it is empty as well, but for the occasional rat. Stump tells you about the adventures that his old party had in clearing these levels, culminating in a meeting with none other than Asmodeus Himself.
